–Here's progress on the most recent project. I recently been very inspired by more shape-driven and patterned illustrations. I have been challenging myself to be less reliant on line with these illustrations, mainly using them for an overall texture rather than a necessity for solidifying the image. So far I am happy with the results– and on to the next.

—Super excited about this post! I’ve got the green light to finally get to start sharing tid-bits of a large project that I’ve been working on for the past month. Sometime around October I’ll have a children’s book being published and put into print! Over the course of the next two weeks I’ll be finishing up the final illustrations– but until the release I’ll keep posting small clips of the final artwork to keep you guys up to date. —I'm very excited about this post! I stumbled across the work of illustrator Kali Ciesemier the other day when looking through the site, 1200 Posters. I was immediately drawn to her great use of color and brilliant use of value- both things I try to achieve in my own work. Her poster, shown here, is highly imaginative and definitely has me hooked!

Make sure to check out the 1200 site, where Kali and fellow SCAD alum Sam Connelly both have posters up for sale. Shout out to both artists- well done

Science Project

Here is the sketch I figured out over the past weekend. I really liked where it was going and really was excited to scan it in once I got to my desktop. It was fun playing with the concept of what could go wrong with a science project. I was happy to work in the plants and foliage which I seem to be enjoying lately.

And I really like the start to the color comp. I wanted to really highlight the rays (punny) with the color and create a warm glow on the boy. I’m definitely going to spread out the spots of cool colors throughout which will be nice on the leaves.

—Earlier this year I started a music video collaboration with a friend Ben Gabelman and the other day I saw this video and was instantly motivated to start up the work again. The video is called Yuki 7 and Illustrator Kevin Dart teamed up with Stéphane Coëdel to make this wonderful blend of stylish illustration and motion work. Definitely check it out. New Studio Space! (Finally)

Over the past week there has been a whirlwind of activity including graduation, relocating, and an overhaul of my home studio space. I scheduled out a full week for the task, and rightfully so– every single cabinet in my room had middle and high school supplies, paperwork, and memorabilia. A lot of the old supplies I am going to be donating to the local YMCA where I have worked as a camp counselor.

This is my desk space for my computer and office work. This combined with the bookshelves below, I almost did not have enough space for all of my art books and novels. All of my close friends know I'm a book fiend. Note the top shelf art– a shout out to my illustration friend, Britt Spencer.

And the pièce de résistance, my drafting table and inspiration wall where I indulge my post card obsession. I try and put up images of my friend's work as well as different invitations for galleries or receptions. As far as the work space goes, I try to keep only the basics on the desk– pencils, my retro (and very handy) electric sharpener, and speakers. It usually only stays this clear for short periods though, so this is a brief moment of joyful cleanliness.

Pre Post-Graduation Post

With the end of the year fast approaching, it is time for a long needed update! The past ten weeks have been extremely busy but also enjoyable. It has been a long time since I have had a quarter where the creativity outweighs the stress of difficult classes and deadlines.

A good portion of my current work has been dedicated to cuisine and edible art. I have to send a shout-out to one of my professors, Linda Warner Constantino, whose food illustration class has only made my dining obsession even stronger. The piece below was one of the assignments where the class was featured on the website, They Draw and Cook.

There have also been two great opportunities that have come from my Publishing class. The first being a cover image for a local Green Guide to Event Planning. The second, an illustration for the featured housing article in What's Up Annapolis? magazine.

And a few parting images of sketches of illustrations that were not taken completely to finish. There are quite a few thumbnails coming from the Publishing class, but I will spare you and post three of my favorites. Thanks for reading and enjoy!

—I've been taking a lot projects just past the conceptual and not much farther than sketches, but this project I couldn't resist taking it to final! I'm not sure if it's an outward expression of my desire to vacation, but it definitely fits into some recent travel pieces I've been working on. More illu posts to come!

—Last week I had the opportunity to sit in on a Skype interview with the illustrator Sterling Hundley. While I was silently geeking out, he went through a lot of great information on starting out in the creative industry. Hundley talked about topics ranging from the initial social withdraw coming from art school and the importance of creative friends to the idea of a business model and what to do for self promotion.

It was really a positive experience hearing from a very successful illustrator, especially one who is very pro-freelance. Over the past couple of weeks my mind has been very focused on searching out full time creative positions. Hearing some of Hundley's values really resonated and confirmed why I chose this career path.

A quick media plug, Hundley is currently publishing a retrospective of his work through AdHouse Books. It's definitely on my wish-list and worth checking out.

Charlie goes to Space

This is my most recent work. I've put together a children's book called Charlie goes to Space. The inspiration revolved around the imagination and how it can be a great source of freedom or sometimes trouble. I worked with acrylics and colored pencil to create the illustrations and I hope you enjoy the work!

More Printmaking

Here are two more prints, the first being linoleum block, second dry point on plexiglas. Both projects were inspired by various creatives that I've been either listening or reading to. The folk singer, Alela Diane inspired the whale piece with her album, The Pirate's Gospel. The etching piece was inspired by Silvia Plath's, The Bell Jar.

Here's the finished version of my Dia des los Muertos illustration I've been working on. I'm hoping to get it printed today and submitted for the Monster Mash S.O.I. Show coming up soon. All of the coloring has been done in photoshop and the linework is just a scanned copy of a tight pencil drawing.

There's an upcoming show competition that SCAD's Society of Illustrators is hosting called the Monster Masquerade. Here's a comp I have been working on for a possible entry. I felt it was a little bit difficult finding a good Halloween subject that has not yet been explored so I decided to take a spin on le Dia des los Muertos.

Chartpak and American Artist Magazine Win

I've just got the final word on a very exciting update. This past spring Chartpak and American Artist Magazine hosted a drawing contest where professors could nominate one student from their university to enter. I had the opportunity to enter three works and won the grand prize! The Pack Rat is now featured in the latest October issue of American Artist Magazine as well as the Summer 2009 edition of Drawing Magazine. Make sure to check it out!

Teatrio Thumbnails

It's been a while since I've posted last and I've been working on the latest Teatrio competition. The theme this year is the "Cannonball Woman" and I'm taking a spin on the theme. My story follows a woman stunt-pilot who is an underdog in a race. Her and her plane are also known as the "Cannonball Woman." Hopefully the thumbnails tell the rest of the story. Enjoy.

This is a character design I drew up for a local aquatic camp shirt. I used pen and ink on a white scratchboard with some scratchboard tools to subtract some of the black areas. This technique is a favorite of mine, just because you can push and pull values that you can't do normally with pen and ink.

Stonehenge

I've been doing more work in the C.F. Payne style. I really enjoy the richness of texture that's possible with the layering of the colored pencil and other materials. This is my most recent, where I continued one of my exploring character's adventures to Stonehenge. His character travels to other wonders of the world including the Sphinx and a Roman Bath.

Hello! This is the first of many entries for this blog highlighting my process, sketches, recent projects and the like. Hope you enjoy.

This is a practice sample of a C.F. Payne process that I have been working on. It involves using colored pencil to establish value and going over it with washes of acrylic, watercolor, oil and more colored pencil. I have found that doing a full value study with the first round of colored pencil works best for the rendering I like to do at the end.
